The Legacy of Columbus in the Caribbean: Exploration and Impact

Christopher Columbus, born circa 1451 in Genoa, Italy, was a skilled sailor who sought a faster route to Asia. After being denied funding by Portugal, France, and England, he gained support from Queen Isabel and King Ferdinand, which led to his 1492 expedition with the ships Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria. Columbus encountered the Taino and Carib people, initiating exchanges marked by conflict and tragedy. The ensuing "Great Dying" resulted in the demise of 95% of indigenous populations within 25 years. His legacy includes the establishment of colonial rule and the Columbian Exchange.
