  2. Background (DHS, CDC 2010) Developmental Background:Teens have already reached 95% of their adult height ( DHS, 2010.) Their thought process enables them to concentrate under stress and cause-effect relationships are better understood than with young teens. This age group is very self-absorbed and often encounters conflicts with family members due to the emerging need for independence. Injury Prevention Strategies:Adolescents are affected by serious health and safety issues including motor vehicle crashes, violence, substance use, and unsafe sex. They struggle with adopting behaviors that could decrease their risk of developing chronic diseases in adulthood (Centers for Disease Controls and Prevention, 2010).

Supplemental Lesson Plan • Directions: Chapters 1 & 2 New Jersey Driving Test Review • List the steps necessary in obtaining a NJ driver license. • Types of Driver Licenses: Identify the NJ driver license laws and explain the types of available driver licenses. Describe other types of licenses (agricultural, boat) and why they may be important. • Describe the five components of requirements necessary for obtaining a license • At Least One Primary Document… • At Least One Secondary Document • Documents must be worth 6 points or more • Proof of Address • Social Security Number • Identify the primary and secondary components of the six point NJ verification system.

Supplemental Lesson Plan • Directions: Chapter 3 Driver Test Review • Passenger and Driver Safety • Describe the 10 areas of car condition safety. • Identify the NJ seat belt law and tips for • safe seat belt use. • Describe child restraint law (8yr/80 lb). • Recall the types of airbags, exceptions to • use and how they are used safely used • with child passengers? • Car Condition:Review the ten things to check prior to driving. • Starting:Explain how to start a parked car safely. What is good driving posture and steering (hand position and hand over hand steering)? What are the driving “blind spots” and how can they be accommodated? • Peer Review:Name all parts of starting checklist and practice posture, hand positioning and steering procedures.

Supplemental Lesson Plan • Rules of the Road • Stopping Distance:What are the stopping distances for 30 mph, 50 mph and 70 mph? • Speed Control: Describe how to control speed and safely accelerate and decelerate. Describe the proper braking procedure for both regular and ABS brakes. • Review Safety Technologies: Explain how seat belts, air bags, and ABS brakes keep passengers and drivers safe. Also, describe the importance of good driver decision making over too much reliance on these types of technologies. • Driving Signals, Reversing:Demonstrate driving signals by hand. Explain reversing, limited rear vision, and how to reverse and see safely. • Turning:Explain how to execute a 3 point turn (K Turn) and how to parallel park. What sort of problems may occur in executing K turns and parallel parking, and how they can be avoided. Describe angle parking.

  13. Supplemental Lesson Plan • Red Light/Green Light Activity.Place a variety of spot markers on the floor, mostly green with a few red dispersed. Students are to walk around the course, stopping for 3 seconds on the red spot markers. First time, everyone is on their own. Second time through, have students walk in pairs with hands on shoulders of person in front and eyes focused on their back. Progress to a group with up to 4-5 people. As students go from one to two to more than two, they will bump into each other. After the activity, discuss safe breaking distances and relate it to safe driving distances from the driver in front, as well as what to pay attention to when driving (driver behavior, traffic lights, potential crash points such as children running out into street.) • Peer Review/Poster:Have students • create a poster based on one of the • areas of safe driving/rules of the road • (example, blind spots), as a public • service poster for the school. Display • the posters throughout the school.

Supplemental Lesson Plan • Directions: Chapter 4 Driver Test Review • Safe Driving Rules and Regulations • Driving, Passing, Yielding: What are the various speed limits on NJ roads? • How do driving conditions mediate speed limits and the consequences of driving too fast/too slow? Describe the Safe Corridors Program. When is centerline passing possible? • Explain safe passing conditions (keeping to the right, and yielding right of way) in the presence of emergency vehicles, buses, and vehicles already at intersections. • What must motorists do when pedestrians are present in a crosswalk?

Supplemental Lesson Plan • Intersections: Review types of intersection • (controlled, uncontrolled, blind and circle) and how to appropriately negotiate them. • Identify highway, parkway and turnpike • intersections. Explain how to safely enter and exit highways, turnpikes, interstates and parkways. Discuss unusual situations such as left exits. • Activity: Have students draw roadway centerlines that indicate passing on driving side, oncoming vehicle side, and no passing.

Supplemental Lesson Plan • Special Conditions, Turning, Stopping, & Parking • Special Conditions:Describe appropriate driving modifications for handling special conditions on the highway, turnpike and parkways; such as weaving lanes, increased volume, construction, toll booths, curves, interchanges, cars on the shoulder disabled vehicles and slow drivers. • Turning:What are the requirements for right turns, right turn on red, left turns under various conditions, staying in lane, not cutting corners, one way, and two way intersections? • Stopping Regulations:Describe stopping regulations. What additional stopping regulations are used for railroad crossing, school buses, emergency vehicles, and ice cream trucks? • Lights:Describe proper use of headlights and other types of lights and proper use for them where appropriate.

  20. Supplemental Lesson Plan • Cell Phones:Use of a handheld electronic device on • any public road or highway is prohibited. Using a • handheld cellar telephone or texting device is a • primary offense. • Activities:Write down the rules on stopping for • stopped school buses. List where cars • cannot park. Discuss and check answers • in the manual. Work in pairs to discuss and • review left turn and right turn requirements. • Processing Questions: • How would you control speed and use proper driving practices for various situations (curves, intersections, entering/exiting highways) contribute to driver safety? • Does adherence to turning, stopping and parking regulations contribute to safe driving? Explain. • How does proper use of headlights contribute to driver safety? • Assessments: Teacher Observation and Evaluation • Demonstrate successful completion of review activities.
