GRANTING AND DECLINING A REQUEST. UNIT 8. LESSON B. Grammar Simple Past 1. Form
E N D
LESSON B • Grammar • Simple Past • 1. Form • The simple past is formed by using the past tense form. When the verb is regular we add –“d” or “-ed” to the bare infinitive to form the past tense. For negative and question we use “did” and “the infinitive” Examples : • I/You/He/She/It/We/They played/did not play. • Did I/you/he/she/it/we/they play? • Yes, I/You/He/She/It/We/They did. • No, I/You/He/She/It/We/They didn’t. • Note : A mistake is to use the past tense form in negatives and in questions. We use “did” and the bare infinitive. • WRONG : Did you played football? • No, I didn’t played it. • RIGHT : Did you play football? • No, I didn’t play it.
LESSON B • A different pattern for the “verb to be. • Examples: • I/He/She/It was/was not (wasn’t) happy. • We/You/They were/were not (wasn’t) happy. • Was I/he/she/it…? • Yes, I/he/she/it was. • No, I/he/she/it wasn’t. • Were we/you/they…? • Yes, we/you/they were. • No, we/you/they weren’t.
LESSON B • 2. Irregular verbs • There are many verbs that we don’t add “-ed” to the bare infinitive to form the simple past, but change it into different forms. • Examples: • I went to Australia last year. (bare infinitive : go) • I made a call to her yesterday, but she wasn’t in the office. • (bare infinitive : make, be) • 3. Completed actions • The simple past is used to talk about completed actions in the past. • Example: • We didn’t go our last night. • We stayed at home and watched TV.
