  3. Senecan Tragedy • Developed by Seneca, a Roman dramatist • Senecan tragedies include ghosts, violent murders, wicked schemes, and ruthless villains

  5. Revenge Tragedy • A special form of tragedy which concentrates on the protagonist's pursuit of vengeance against those who have done him wrong • These plays often concentrate on the moral confusion caused by the need to answer evil with evil

Example • Hamlet is an example of a revenge tragedy • Hamlet tries to avenge his father's murder, but is unsuccessful  •  One of the main problems in the story is that Hamlet delays his actions until the end of the play • As a result, Polonius, Laertes, Ophelia, Gertrude, Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern die
