  2. Senecan Tragedy • Dramas written mostly by Seneca the Younger, a roman stoic philosopher and politician in the first century A.D. • Rediscovered in the sixteenth century, they influenced both Neoclassical tragedy and Elizabethan tragedy. • The plays put heavy emphasis on supernatural elements.

  3. Examples of Senecan Tragedy • The Madness of Hercules • The Trojan Women • Octavia • Oedipus (rewritten by Seneca)

  4. Revenge Tragedy • Based upon Senecan Tragedies, these dramas are filled with gruesome and morbidly comic violence. • They usually incorporate secret murder, ghosts, an interval where enemies plot against each other, madness, and catastrophe which kills everyone. • The violence is often graphically spelt out.

  5. Examples of Revenge Tragedy • The most famous is probably Shakespeare's Hamlet, the plot of which the movie The Lion King is based on. • The Spanish Tragedy is also a famous play, written by Thomas Kyd.
