So, what is Fiction!?. Duh, Shrek. Fiction is a literary work based on the imagination and not necessarily on fact. I’m so confused!!! If fiction is a literary work based on imagination and not on fact, then what is REALISTIC FICTION?!.

  1. So, what is Fiction!? Duh, Shrek. Fiction is a literary work based on the imagination and not necessarily on fact.

  2. I’m so confused!!! If fiction is a literary work based on imagination and not on fact, then what is REALISTIC FICTION?! REALISTIC FICTION is a form of fiction that deals with events that could really happen in life.

Okay, so we have established the definitions of fiction and realistic fiction, but in order to begin our first realistic fiction reading, we need to refresh our memories on the different elements of a story. We are going to take a few notes on these elements today. Just a quick reminder– when you are taking notes, you do not have to write down every single word. Make sure that you keep your notes organized by using an outline.

  5. A. Characters • Definition: Any persons, animals, things, or natural forces presented as person in story

  6. B. Setting • Definition: Where the story takes place

  7. C. Plot • Definition: The sequence of events in a story • 1. The plot has five major parts: • a.) Exposition: The first part of a story that establishes the character(s), setting, and sometimes even the plot • b.) Rising Action: The events in the story that lead up to the climax, or height of the story

  8. C. Plot (continued) • c.) Climax: the decisive moment in a story; where the height of the plot takes place • d.) Falling Action: The series of events that take place after the climax and that lead to the conclusion. • e.) Resolution: Usually comes at the end of the story when the problem has been resolved or fixed

  9. D. Point of View • Definition: the perspective from which a story is told • 1. There are three different points of view: • a.) First person: I, me • b.) second person: you, you • c.) Third person: he, she, it, them

  10. E. Theme • Definition: A reoccurring element in a story • Example: SHREK= FAIRY TALES

  11. F. Conflict • Definition: • 1. There are four types of conflict that can be found in a story: • a.) man vs. man • b.) man vs. nature • c.) man vs. himself • d.) man vs. society
