  1. Year 10 Science 06/07/2011

  2. To do now… • IN YOUR WORKBOOKS… • Title: Earthquakes and the Richter Scale • Date: 06th July 2011

  3. Now we know… • The structure of the Earth • Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core • How the Crust is divided up into segments called Tectonic Plates • That the semi liquid Mantle below the crust moves in convection currents and drags the Tectonic Plates with it • Which creates Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Tsunamis and Mountains.

  4. The Christchurch Earthquake • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KetOf15Q3lc

  5. Earthquakes • Some earthquakes don’t cause much damage • This can be because there was not much movement from the plates and therefore only a small amount of force was generated OR because the movement happened further towards the centre of the Earth. • Look at the next two slides, which earthquake would be more damaging to humans if they generated the same amount of force?

  6. Earthquake Anatomy For the end of topic test you need to know ALL the terms on this slide

  7. CRUST: Hard- Tectonic Plates Mantle: Semi Liquid- Convection currents

  8. CRUST: Hard- Tectonic Plates Mantle: Semi Liquid- Convection currents

  9. Copy into your books • The damage an earthquake causes depends on the depth and magnitude of the rupture. We measure this using the Richter Scale.

  10. How to measure the strength of an Earthquake? • The Richter Scale • Goes from 1-10. • Stick sheet D9.2 into your books • Follow the instructions on sheet D9.1 and stick each of the rectangles in the correct spot on your Richter Scale

  11. Terms you need to know about Earthquakes • Epicenter • Focus • Wave fronts • Fault • Richter Scale • Tectonic plates • Convection currents

  12. Earthquake distruction • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtBXTvtFaCU&NR=1&feature=fvwp

  13. Create your own Glossary • A glossary is a list of words and their definitions, which relate to a specific topic • Our topic is ‘Our Amazing Planet’ • Use the hand out to create a Glossary for yourself • This will be VERY helpful for the end of topic test which will be NEXT Thursday Period 3 • Write this in your homework diary!

  14. Why do we have Day and Night? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-oLJxjCzBg&feature=related • Student demonstration
