Now we know… • The structure of the Earth • Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core • How the Crust is divided up into segments called Tectonic Plates • That the semi liquid Mantle below the crust moves in convection currents and drags the Tectonic Plates with it • Which creates Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Tsunamis and Mountains.

Earthquakes • Some earthquakes don’t cause much damage • This can be because there was not much movement from the plates and therefore only a small amount of force was generated OR because the movement happened further towards the centre of the Earth. • Look at the next two slides, which earthquake would be more damaging to humans if they generated the same amount of force?

  9. Copy into your books • The damage an earthquake causes depends on the depth and magnitude of the rupture. We measure this using the Richter Scale.
