  1. Do Bellevue High School Seniors Skip School during the Spring? By Kristina, Delaney, and Jade

  2. Why We Chose This • Senior attendance declines as spring approaches • Is senioritis present at Bellevue High?

  3. Methodology • Assigned list of seniors 001-339 • Selected 30 students using random digit generator • “On average during the spring, how many classes do you skip per week (not including illness or other conflicts)?” • We had each of them write down the answer to their questions in order to prevent anonymity bias between them and their peers.

  4. Problems • One problem that we encountered was that two of the students were gone that day. In order to prevent non-response bias, we surveyed them the next day.

  5. Hypothesis • H0: µ = 0 • Ha : µ > 0 • µ = the true mean number of times seniors skip per week

  6. Conditions • Randomness: We took a simple random sample of the entire senior class • Normality: n≥30, 30≥30; thus sampling distribution is approximately normal by Central Limit Theorem • Independence: N≥10n, N≥10(30),N≥300 • There are 338 seniors in the entire senior class which is greater than 300, thus the 10% condition is met

  7. Data Students # Classes Skipped Per Week

  8. 1-Sample T-Test • t= • t = = = 7.392 • x̅= 2.5 • µ= 0 • s = 1.852 • n = 30 • df = 30 -1 = 29 • P ( t > 7.392) =1.907x

  9. Conclusion • Since our p-value of 1.907x is smaller than our alpha level of 0.05, we will reject the null hypothesis. Thus, we have significant evidence that high school seniors do skip class in the spring. • Possible Type I and II Errors: • Type 1: To think that seniors skip when they actually do not. • Type 2: To think that seniors don’t skip when they actually do. It is hard to determine which error type is worse so we left our alpha level at 0.05.

  10. 90% Confidence Interval • C= 2.5±1.96*(1.852/)= (1.808, 3.192) • Thus, we are 90% confident that high school seniors at Bellevue High School skip between 1.808 and 3.192 classes a week. This matched our conclusion in our hypothesis test of rejecting the null hypothesis since 0 is not captured in the confidence interval.

  11. Questions: • What was the null hypothesis? • What kind of test did we perform? • What would be a type 2 error?
