Aims of The New Deal • FDR’s program to re-establish the economy after the falling into a depression • The plan highlighted a relief for the needy, financial reform and economic aide.
The Bank Problem • The Emergency Banking Relief Act was established on March 9th, 1933 • Ultimately the US Dollar was devalued 40%
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) • Established in May of 1933 • Insure individuals’ bank accounts • Protect people against losses due to bank failures • Provided federal insurance for individual banks accounts of up to $5,000. • Reassured millions of customer that the money was safe
Federal Securities Act • Established in May of 1933 • Required corporations to provide complete, accurate information on all stock offerings.
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) • Established in June of 1934 as a regulatory agency • Monitors the stock market and enforces laws regulating the sale of stock
Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) • May 12th, 1933 - AAA was passed • Crop surplus lessened value of crops • Raise crop prices by paying farmers to leave a certain amount of land unplanted, thus lowering production.
Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC) • Provided almost 3 million men aged 18-25 with work and wages between 1933 and 1942 • Main focus was on natural resource conservation, mountains, national parks etc… • Planted over 3 billion trees, developing over 800 state parks and building more than 46,000 bridges
New Deal: The Sequel • Commonly referred to as the “Second New Deal” or the “Second Hundred Days” • FDR called on congress to provide more extensive relief for both farmers and workers.
Works Progress Administration(WPA) • Established as part of the Second New Deal • Provided unemployed with jobs in construction, garment making, teaching, the arts amongst various other working fields.
Social Security Act • Established in 1935. • Provide aid to retirees, the unemployed, people with disabilities, and families with dependent children
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) • Established in May of 1933 • Construct dams and power plants in Tennessee Valley region to generate electricity as well as to prevent floods
