  2. Objectives • By the end of the lesson, SWBAT explain the ideas of the New Deal. • By the end of the lesson, SWBAT describe and identify they purpose of the TVA, CCC, and WPA.

  3. REVIEW • What was life like for many Americans during the Great Depression? • Who was President of the United States at the start of the Great Depression?

  4. Vocabulary • New Deal - programs set up by President Roosevelt to help Americans during the Great Depression • Progress - The act of moving forward and making things better. • Conservation - The act of saving something from destruction.

  5. President Hoover • Because of the Great Depression do you think Hoover was popular, or unpopular as a President?

  6. 1932 Presidential Election • Hoover was very unpopular, so when he tried to run for re-election in 1932, he lost against Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

  7. Franklin Delano Roosevelt • During the campaign for President, Roosevelt brought up all the bad things that were happening around America. • He gave people hope that with him as President, America would get out of this down time in the economy.

  10. The New Deal • Immediately after Roosevelt was elected, he started a new program to jump-start the economy called the New Deal • The New Deal lasted from 1933 - 1936. • The New Deal was a bunch of programs that gave people jobs and helped create a better future for Americans.

  11. New Deal - Programs • The New Deal was made up of three big programs that gave people jobs: The Works Progress Administration, Civilian Conservation Corps, and the Tennessee Valley Authority. • Why were these programs so important to a lot of people in America?

  12. Works Progress Administration (WPA) • The Works Progress Administration was the largest New Deal program. • The WPA helped build roads, highways, and remodel old buildings. It also gave seamstress jobs to women.

  13. WPA • The WPA employed 2-3 million Americans • The WPA spent over $11.4 billion improving infrastructure around America • How did the WPA help Americans?

  14. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) • During the Great Depression, the Tennessee Valley was in bad shape. People were suffering from Malaria, people were very poor, and many didn’t have electricity.

  16. Tennessee Valley Authority • The TVA was created to create huge dams that would stop floods and give people electricity all over the South Eastern part of the U.S.A. • Why was the TVA good for the South Eastern part of the U.S.A.?

  17. The Civilian Conservation Corps • The CCC was designed to give young unemployed men jobs. • The goal of the CCC was to conserve (save) natural resources such as large forests and parklands. • Young men in the CCC planted trees, helped make the soil better in the Dust Bowl so people could once again plant crops. The CCC also protected the parklands.
