This project investigates the performance characteristics of two motion tracking modalities for virtual environments: Ascension Technology's Flock of Birds, an electromagnetic tracking system, and InterSense's IS-600, which utilizes a combination of ultrasonic, infrared, and inertial principles. Case studies analyzed both systems for static distortion, temporal stability, and the influence of metal on tracking accuracy. The evaluation results will guide the selection of the most suitable tracking modality for specific virtual reality applications.

Experimental setup Base unit Calibration of Virtual Environments Overview In this project the performance characteristics of two motion tracking modalities for use in a virtual environment were investigated. Ascension Technology’s Flock of Birds is an electromagnetic tracking system. InterSense’s IS-600 uses a combination of ultrasonic, infrared, and inertial principles. Case studies were performed for both tracking systems to study static distortion, temporal stability, and the effect of metal. The requirements of the virtual reality application would ultimately guide the choice of the tracker modality. InertiaCube Bird SoniDisc Figure 2. Tracking hardware
