SUMMARY • Research is needed to investigate the causes, prevention and treatment of over 100 forms of arthritis • The National Arthritis Action Plan provides for coordinated efforts between the National Institutes of Health National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, the Centers for Disease Control and state agencies • Arthritis funding in the FY2003 budget is currently 2% of the total NIH budget, although it affects 33% of the population • Approval of the FY2003 HHS budget will allow implementation of the the NAAP
