  3. Communion • Ordinance or Sacrament? An ordinance is symbolic reenactments of the gospel message that Christ lived, died, was raised from the dead, ascended to heaven and will someday return. Ordinances are determined by three factors: They were instituted by Christ They were taught by the apostles, They were practiced by the early church

FOUNDATION SCRIPTURE I Corinthians 11: 23-27 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying,“This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

  6. OT and NT Passover and Communion  the events of the cross and resurrection are actually the fulfillment of Passover  This is why 1 Corinthians 5:7 says,

". . . Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed

  7. Passover and Communion Compared • Both services are "permanent" memorials: "And you shall observe this thing as an ordinance for you and your sons forever" (Exod 12:24). "This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." "For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes" (1 Cor 11:25b, 26).

Passover and Communion Compared •  Both services involve bread: "In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening" (Exod 12:18). "And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, 'Take, eat; this is My body'" (Matt 26:26, and parallels).

  9. Passover and Communion Compared • Both involve blood And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two door posts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it" (Exod 12:7). "For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins" (Matt 26:28)

  10. Passover and Communion Compared  Both involve communal fellowship: There was to be one lamb per household, and if one household was too small it was to meet with the neighbors. "So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart" (Acts 2:46). Difference OT- the lamb was needed, NT no lamb mentioned

  11. MATURITY OF THE LAMB The Passover lamb had to be "a male of the first year. Whenever a lamb is one year old it is fully mature and capable of going its own way Jesus began to be about thirty years of age," (Luke 3:23). This was the age of recognized maturity requirements of the priest in Num. 4:3: "From thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old Passover and Communion Compared

  12. Passover and Communion Compared THE TIME OF TESTING FOR BLEMISHES The lamb selected for sacrifice had to be put up for three days. This was from the 10th to the 14th of the month When Christ died upon the cross, he did so without spot or blemish. He was the perfect lamb for our sacrifice. He was the Lamb of God, our Passover sacrificed for us

What do you want me to take from this experience. Ask God to speak to you. Tell God that you are listening. • Take a moment to listen. • Write down what you sense the Lord is saying to you.
