  1. Welcome to 1st Grade! Building the foundation for a strong academic future.

  2. Every child matters. Each child will be given the attention and resources they need to be successful.

  3. A peek at the 1st grade schedule – **Mrs. Hassenboehler and Ms. Harris switch classrooms half way through the day. **Ms. Gil’s class will stay with her all day.

  8. What to expect in 1st grade: HUGE growth in all areas! Daily homework in Reading and Spelling. It will be sent home on Monday and should be returned on Friday. Grades – students will earn percentage grades for various assignments, tests and all homework. Hands-on-learning. Learning concepts will be reinforced with concrete objects, experiments, songs, poetry, movement and FUN. Guided reading books will be sent home every night to be practiced and returned the following day.

  10. Expectations • The School opens at 7:00 am. Be on time to school. 7:30 is when we pick them up. • Parents are invited to have breakfast and/or lunch on Mondays and Fridays. • Be in uniform. • Be ready for the day with the necessary materials. (Finished homework, guided reading books, etc.)‏ • Try your best! • Cooperate with the teacher. • Participate in class.

How to be Successful in the Two-Way Dual Language Program • In Class: • Look, Listen, Act, Repeat, Connect • 1.  Look at the person speaking. • 2.  Listen to what they are saying. • 3.  Act out what they are saying (with hand motions). • 4.  Repeat what you hear (copycat). • 5.  Make connections to what it might be in English/Spanish (cognates). • Outside of Class: • -Practice using common phrases in restaurants & at home. • -Watch simple TV programs (cartoons) in Spanish/English.  Not the News or Sports (too fast). •     "El Chavo del 8" or "Qubo"  (Repeat phrases you hear) • -Make friends/play with people who speak Spanish/English.  (You can get an ear for phrases quickly.) • -Visit a Spanish/English church.  (You can learn lots of words from the Bible & songs) • -Learn songs.  (Rhythm, movement, repeated phrases are great for learning languages) • -Review COGNATES.  There are so many (especially technical terminology)! • -READ, READ, READ!!!  (Use the pictures to infer what will happen in the book, then read) • Important Info: • **Reading & Writing instruction and testing is only in Spanish.  English support is given during the "English" part of the day (math, science, ESL). •    We do not give reading levels in English. • **Please continue to support your child in English reading & writing at home** • **Spanish support packet (vocabulary, grammar, etc.) will be sent home every week so that you may help you child and know what we are working on in class.  • **Join us at the Parent Ed Nights!!!

  15. *Behavior Folders will be sent home DAILY to be reviewed and initialed. *All papers in the left pocket should stay home. *All papers in the right pocket should be reviewed (signed as needed) and returned. Behavior Folders and McWhorter Folders

  16. Homework Will be sent home on MONDAYS in the Take-HomeFolder. Return signed and completed homework in Take-HomeFolder on FRIDAYS. Spelling tests will be on Fridays. Re-takes will be on the following Monday. Any student who receives a grade below 79 can re-take the test. Homework is meant for students to reinforce skills from school. Students should try to complete assignments independently with parents assisting when necessary. 30 minutes of daily homework is sufficient.

  17. Dismissal Procedures Car Riders – If your student goes home in a car, they will need to stay with the teacher until their name is called. Please hang a name tag in the window (ask your teacher for one). The name tags allow us to move the line much faster. Please keep yours or ask for another if it is lost or broken. Walkers – starting on Wednesday they will all be waiting beneath the trees for you. (show map) Any changes in dismissal should include a note to the teacher.

  18. Volunteering We are asking for one hour of your time this year. We have multiple things that count as volunteering. We have things that could be done at home, at school or even on field trips. There may be times that help is asked for in the office, classrooms like music, art, or PE and even for PTA. There are lots of types of volunteering. Also, for every day of volunteering we are offering an any day pass for lunch at school. Please, remember to sign in at the office and get a volunteer sticker every time you come up. Parent Volunteer Orientation September 12th @ 2pm and September 13th @ 8am
