What is Index? • Adiscipline observed in the Library, a technical work, a detailed list, usually arranged alphabetically, of the specific information in a publication • Pivotal tool for accurate retrieval of information to address specific needs of readers. • An instrument commonly used in a Library, a system for ease of retrieval of work esp (Book, Art, Academic Substance)

  4. 1.a. What are the types of indexes? Descriptive Abstract • Outlines the topics. • Is like a table of contents in paragraph form. • Describe the work. • Are less and less common. Informative Abstract • Provides detail. Formats of Informative Abstracts: • Identifying information (bibliographic citation or other identification of the document) • Concise restatement of the main point, initial problem or other background • Methodology (for experimental work) and key findings • Major conclusions INDEXING

Three types of indexing languages. • Controlled language – Approved library terms to describe document. • Natural language – Any term found in the document, esp. a question can be used to describe the document. • Free language - Any term that will describe the document.   7. 1. d. What are the uses of index? • Represent the subject, most appropriate term • To bring vocabulary prescribed language for ease of retrieval of information • High precision and explicitness of information retrieval. INDEXING

What is an Abstract • It is a synonimous to summary or to be more profound a synopsis. • It is an abbreviated, accurate, representation, of the significant content of a document. • It is accompanied by an adequate bibliographic description to be able the original document to be traced. ABSTRACTING

What are abstracts? • A discipline, a formal methodical work of synopsis in a document. • Tool for readers, especially as they keep up with an explosion of information, • It interprets document in more condensed manner that enable to present precise information to whether in texts, art, research and or digital data. ABSTRACTING

  11. 2. b. What are the parts of an abstracts? • Document identification number • Author • Author affiliation • Title of the document • Source of the document ; vol. issue number, date of pub., specific pages, etc. • Original language ABSTRACTING

  12. 2. c. What are the uses of abstracts? • Facilitate selection • Save the time of the reader • Facilitate literature search • Promote current awareness • Overcome language barrier • Tool or an instrument such as indexes, bibliographies, reviews. ABSTRACTING
