  2. First schools • First school on corner of Church and Bree Streets in Cape Town 1894 • Worcester 1903 – now THS Drostdy • Oudtshoorn 1913 - now Langenhoven Gimnasium

  3. First subjects • Blacksmithing • Cart-building • Cobbler • Gardening • Tailoring • Woodwork • (Tuition in the 3Rs after school 17:00 – 19:00 in English)

  4. Trade Schools 1923 • Admission requirement Std.6 • Full Time Technical-, Commercial- and Home Economic Schools • First National Senior Certificate 1925 • (In late 30’s Motor Mechanics is introduced in the curriculum to replace Cart-building, Cobbler and Gardening)

  5. Technical High Schools 1946 • Introduction of Electrician-work into the Curriculum • In the period 1960 to 1972 the number of T.H.Schools increased and schools were established in Pinelands 1961, George 1968 and Bellville 1972 (All offering Electrician work)

  6. Differentiated Education 1967 In this period the character of the schools changed to be more of an Academic school. Less time for the vocational subject due to the introduction of Religious instruction, Vocational Guidance, Physical education and History and Geography in Std. 6 & 7 Rationalization of subjects; Furniture making and Carpentry and Joinery into a more generic Woodworking. Building construction and Machine construction into a more generic Technical Drawing

  7. Technika Subjects 1985 The Cape Education Department took a policy decision that All new Technical study fields in the province will only be the Technika subjects. (Civil, Electrical and Mechanical) The first school to offer the Technika subject was Fish Hoek Senior High School. Due to the fact that schools where new facilities were built, preferred to offer the old technical subjects the CED reversed its policy. Technika (Electrical was changed to Electrician work, Technika (Civil) to Motor Mechanics and Technika (Mechanical) to Fitting and Turning.

  8. Proposed FET National Curriculum Framework 2000 • One broad based Electrical subject covering all sub disciplines. • Three Learning Outcomes • Process skills • Electrical concepts • Values and Attitude in the workplace

  9. Impact of NCS • The focus of the Electrical subject is going to changed from Vocational to an Academic subject. • Like languages, Science and Mathematics, the Electrical subject is changing to a broad base subject, a foundation for studies at aHigher Education Institution.
