  2. Classroom Description • Tenth grade general music/band/show choir room • Urban/mixed community • Large, open room covered with motivational posters and posterboards with important events; piano, guitars, other instruments are placed throughout the room; desks are on the sides of the room, moved to the center when needed • Three classes in a day (general music, band, show choir), with band practice being held on Tuesdays/Thursdays after school • More girls in show choir (70/30 split), about even in other classes • Latino students are the smallest minority in the school

  3. Standards • MU.O.MAH.4.3 - discuss and analyze American musical heritage and culture • MU.O.MAH.4.7 - describe distinguishing characteristics of representative music genres and styles from a variety of cultures Students who are interested in a musical career (or just desire to learn about music) must understand the differences in musical genres and how different cultures influence the development of music. They must understand the origins of contemporary music and see the events that caused music to develop the way it has. They also need to gain a respect of different genres and styles of music so as not to believe that one style is less important to the overall scheme of music and musical development.

  4. Being a Culturally Competent Teacher • This poster is designed to cause all students to feel included inside the musical education classroom as well as music-based extracurricular activities. • The different artists represent different genres and styles of music, showing that all types of music are recognized and respected equally; the artists represent pop, rap, country, rock, and electronic music. • These artists are also racially diverse and have different backgrounds, enforcing the idea that anyone has the potential to be musically creative and talented, and they do not have to feel lesser or feel discriminated against because of their race or musical preference. • The artists on the poster are both contemporary and likely recognized by most of the student body, and (most) are also accepted as being good role models in the musical community. • The organization of the poster itself gives a sense that every artist and genre is equal, showing no favor to one over the other.
