  1. Year One Parents’ MeetingWednesday 12th September 2018 Welcome and thank you for your continued support.

  2. Autumn Term In the Autumn Term the children are working in a similar environment to the Foundation Stage. The Year 1 classrooms include similar features to the Foundation Stage classrooms e.g. role play, writing area, construction. The children have the opportunity to initiate some activities independently.

  3. The Carousel We plan our Literacy and Numeracy in the form of a carousel. This involves having different activities which the children take part in throughout the week.

  4. Literacy Carousel W/B 8th September 2014 (Week 2)

  5. Numeracy Carousel W/B 1st October 2016

  6. Other possible activities include: • In the role play area (Police station/Fire station) the children are encouraged to write out lists and incident reports, take telephone calls and record their messages etc. They are also involved in speaking and listening tasks. • Writing area - Matching words to pictures, creating sentences by hunting words. • Focussed tasks include Bingo games, writing invitations and hunting shapes in and around the school.

  7. A Typical Day in Year 1 • Speed Sounds • Numeracy or Literacy • Break -Fruit • Numeracy/Literacy • Lunch- Hear readers • R.E./Science/Geography/History/ Art/ D&T • Story time • (Not forgetting PSHE, PE, Music, French, Handwriting, Library, ICT) • Homework will be sent home on Friday and should be returned by Wednesday. This will phonics revision and either a piece of Maths or handwriting practice. Reading should happen ideally every day – even just a couple of pages is fine. P.E. will be every Wednesday and Friday. Library time will be on Monday

  8. Year One Numeracy Targets Some examples: • I can count to and across 100 from any number. • I can use number bonds and subtraction facts within 20 (e.g. 6+4=10 10-4=6) • I can recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes.

  9. How to help at home Make maths as fun as possible by playing games Make use of mathematical opportunities as they arise in the local environment e.g. spotting number plates in the car, shopping and change, cooking, laying table, reading/ writing numbers such as house/ phone numbers.

  10. Literacy is BIG! • It is a BIG subject which covers reading, writing, spelling and handwriting in all areas of the curriculum including R.E. It takes up a BIG chunk of the children's time in school. • Having good literacy skills will help the children in all areas of their lives and they need them to get the most out of the school curriculum. • Most teachers would agree that reading at home is THE most important way in which you can help.

  11. Literacy/Topic writing in Year 1 In Literacy/Topic the children will be looking at: Recounts Diary writing Fact files Information texts Instructions Nursery rhymes Poems Descriptive sentences Comic strips Stories Labels and captions Postcards Riddles Writing for different purposes

  12. Activities/Ideas to help your Child with their writing at home A few minutes spent on a game or activity can be very productive. • Remember the golden rule: little and often! Sometimes your child may be tired and if so it is better to leave it than push too hard. • Remember young children learn from repetition so repeating and revisiting learning is really useful at this stage. Key words Practising the key words regularly makes sure the children become confident with reading, spelling and using them. Use of whiteboards Wipe clean whiteboards are a fantastic tool for learning to write. They offer the opportunity for the children to have a go at writing words, make mistakes and wipe straight off for another go. This enables the children to try and improve their confidence in doing so.

  13. Lists Shopping- ask your child to help you to write your shopping list. An older child can read out your list for you as you go round the supermarket. Other lists: “Who shall we send Christmas cards to?” “Who shall we invite to your birthday party?” “What do we need to take with us to Gran’s?” “What jobs do we need to do today?” Signs Ask your child to make signs for the house, perhaps to help a visitor, eg. toilet (to put on the door), kettle (for the plug), ‘Please Wipe Your Feet’, ‘Please Shut The Door’. Write messages Use post-it notes, for example ‘’Where’s your PE kit?” “Tidy Your Room!” “I like your picture” “Thank you for my card” “I love you”. Use magnetic letters on your fridge for the same purpose.

  14. Speed Sounds We continue to teach Speed Sounds in Year 1. We teach these as a whole class and also in groups so that the children have the opportunity to focus on particular sounds that they need to learn and practise. In Year 1 the focus is very much on reading words using sounds and we talk to the children about sounding and blending. The speed sounds that the different groups are covering will be in the homework so that you can support your child at home. At the end of Year 1 there is a phonics assessment which covers all of the Speed Sounds in Sets 1,2 and 3. The children need to sound and blend real words and ‘alien’ words. There will be a meeting nearer the time about this phonics screening.

  15. Set 3 looks at alternative ways to make these sounds. E.g. ay/ai/a_e play train cake

  16. How to help at home Reading to your child • encourages a love of books • widens a child’s vocabulary • it’s great fun for both of you! Reading activities • Talk about what is going on in the story • what the child thinks might happen next • how the characters might be feeling • Point to the words as you read them • look at and talk about the pictures together • Do not cover the pictures as they are an aid to helping children to read the words they do not understand.

  17. Even if your child is a competent reader at a certain star level we may keep them at that level a little longer in order to give them a wider understanding of different text types and develop their comprehension skills. Remember to visit your local library and borrow books from peers to broaden your child’s range of reading.

  18. Thank you for coming Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions.
