Brief Overview Step 1: Send test signal to desired radio. Step 2: RX radio sends back reply signal. Friends measure this signal strength. Step 3: TX radio sends out message. Friends not in range transmit noise.
System Requirements • Battery life of at least 12 hours • Receive and transmit • Operate while walking • Operate up to 300 meters. • Receive signal with 95% success rate. • Voice Transmission Bandwidth • Maintain secure communications • Less than 10% interception rate • Handheld and less than 2lbs.
Software Requirements RX Radio TX Radio RX Radio RX Radio
Radio Diagram Transceiver Microphone Receiver Antenna Microcontroller Transmitter Speaker
Testing • Problems • Board’s are unreliable for RF • Varying RSSI • Tentative Conclusion difference of .05 to .1 volt
Design Challenges • Noise • Appropriate Signal Threshold • Duration for transmission • Variable transmission strength • Procuring reliable data • Demonstrate functioning system • Computer display of radio activity
Team Roles • Adebayo – Hardware production, radio testing • Mark – Programming radio unit, radio debugging • Joe – Report, Hardware production, radio testing • Simon – GUI for final demonstration, radio programming, radio testing
What is next • Complete protocols for all radios • Field testing • GUI for Final Demonstration • Fabrication of Radios
Radio Demonstration • Send transmit signal • Receive transmit signal with receiver and eavesdropper • Friend transmits noise to block eavesdropper • Eavesdropper picks up noise signal • Receiver picks up desired transmit signal
