  1. Water, Baptism& Salvation 1 Peter 3:20-22

  2. “Baptism now saves you” • It’s a simple phrase • The meaning is obvious • But much of the religious world doesn’t believe or accept it • The problem? • Would God really use something as common as water to bring about something as important as salvation?

  3. The Waters of the Red Sea • Exod. 14:21-31 • The Israelites were slaves, in bondage • The Egyptians were trying to recapture them • God saved them them through the water • A baptism into Moses (1 Cor 10:1-2) • Saved from capture • Saved from slavery, bondage

  4. The Waters of the Jordan River • 2 Kings 5:9-14 • Naaman was under a death sentence • God had him dip 7 times in the water • God saved him through water • Saved from his disease • Saved from death • Gave him a new body, a new life, a rebirth

  5. The Waters of the Flood • Genesis 6-7 • Man had become corrupt and evil (Gen 6:5-7) • Noah alone was found righteous (Gen 6:8-9) • How long could one man remain righteous in the face of so much wickedness? • God saved Noah through water • Saved from the wicked (who were destroyed) • Separated from the past • Given a new life apart from the wickedness of the former world

  6. The Waters of Baptism • 1 Pet 3:20-22 • Like the Israelites, we are freed from slavery to sin (Rom 6:16-18) • Like Naaman, we are born again (Jn 3:3-5) • Like Noah, we are given new life, separated from the past (Rom 6:1-7)

  7. Conclusion • In no case did the saving power come from the water • The saving power was clearly in God • Yet in each case God chose water to be His instrument to bring about salvation • Therefore, it is no surprise that God connects our salvation to water also • The only question is if you are willing to be saved (Mk 16:16)
