  3. Learning Intention: • To familiarise you with the purpose of First Aid in a wilderness setting; • To practise how to approach a casualty.

  4. Success Criteria: By the end of this session everyone should be able to: • State and understand the 3 ‘P’s of First Aid; • Approach a conscious and an unconscious casualty and check for vital signs.

  5. Activities: Requirements of the Skills Section Revision: - What is First Aid? - What is different about First Aid in the mountains? 3. ABC drills & approaching a casualty

  6. REQUIREMENTS OF THE SKILLS SECTION • 1 hour/week over 3 months • = Attend 15 out of 17 lessons • Missed sessions can be caught up with Mr. Cant Weds 15.30-16.15 • < 15 sessions & no catch-up = NO AWARD + NO EXPEDITION

  7. 3 ‘P’s of First AID • To PRESERVE life • To PREVENT worsening • To PROMOTE recovery

  8. Scenario: While walking alone in the mountains, Dave hears a clatter of rocks following by screaming. Upon investigation he sees a climber unconscious at the bottom of a crag. A second climber is dangling from a rope holding his heavily bleeding face. Nearby a woman is sitting holding her arm and a child is screaming. Who is the most important person here?

  9. ABC Drills • ASSESS the situation: danger to you/others? Casualties? • BREATHING: Are they breathing? Check/clear airway. • CIRCULATION: Pulse?
