  1. Faith-Driven Duty

  2. Duty and Obligation • House chores! • Work • Leadership • Sacred duty • Civic duty • Church duty? • If Jesus came to our Church, what would He say? • I think that Jesus would have some good things to say, and then unfortunately some things that shouldn’t have to be said, but must.

  3. Pattern of Rejecting Responsibility • 1) Excuses – Num 13:28,33 ~ However, the people living in the land are strong, and the cities are large and fortified. We also saw the descendants of Anak there….We also saw the Nephilim there. (The offspring of Anak were descended from the Nephilim.) To ourselves we seemed like grasshoppers, and we must have seemed the same to them. • 2) Create Fantasy – Num 14:2-3 ~ All the Israelites complained about Moses and Aaron, and the whole community told them, “If only we had died in the land of Egypt, or if only we had died in this wilderness! Why is the LORD bringing us into this land to die by the sword? Our wives and little children will become plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?”

  4. 3) Blame game – Num 14:4,10 ~ So they said to one another, “Let’s appoint a leader and go back to Egypt.”….While the whole community threatened to stone them, the glory of the Lord appeared to all the Israelites at the tent of meeting. • 4) Missed opportunity – Num 14:40,44-45 ~ They got up early the next morning and wet up the ridge of the hill country, saying, “Let’s go to the place the Lord promised, for we were wrong.”….But they dared to go up the ridge of the hill country, even though the ark of the Lord’s covenant and Moses did not leave the camp. Then the Amalekites and Canaanites who lived in that part of the hill country came down, attacked them, and routed them as far as Hormah.

  5. Duty Isn’t Comfortable • Mark 8:4 ~ His disciples answered Him, “Where can anyone get enough bread here in this desolate place to fill these people? • Mark 8:6 ~ Then He commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke the loves, and kept on giving them to His disciples to set before the people. So they served the loaves to the crowd. • Mark 8:8 ~ They ate and were filled. Then they collected seven large baskets of leftover pieces.

  6. Revitalize! • The disciples all had various gifts, and even when those gifts didn’t apply, they still served. • If we have gifts we aren’t taking advantage of, or simply keeping secret, shame on us. • It is surprising how much as a PK and also as a youth pastor the things I hear in the hallways of this church. • Do we honestly believe in the Holy Spirit’s ability to indwell within us and awake our hearts? • He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.    And what does the Lord require of you?To act justly and to love mercy    and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

  7. BenedictionHebrews 13:20-21 20 Now may the God of peace—who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, and ratified an eternal covenant with his blood— 21 may he equip you with all you need for doing his will. May he produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him. All glory to him forever and ever! Amen.
