About fashion in the 70’s • The first half of the 1970’s was known as, post-woodstock, this was a continuation of what is generally regarded as late sixties fashion. • In the 70’s it was all about glam, glitter and pop. With high platforms and stage costume. Eg- David Bowie wearing a costume by Kansai Yamamoto in 1973. • For the 70’s female it was all about, volume and layers with doubled skirts, unstructured silhouettes, layered tops and voluminous coats. • Also drainpipe trousers were very fashionable in the 70’s and this style was shown in great films such as Grease.
Punk sub-culture • The punk subculture emerged in the United Kingdom in the mid 1970s. • The punk subculture is centered a lot around music, with them listening to recordings or live concerts of a loud, aggressive genre of rock music called punk rock. • In fashion punks seek to outrage others with highly theatrical use of clothing, hairstyles, cosmetics, and tattoos. • And very famously in the 70’s Vivienne Westwood opened her shop, SEX on King’s Rd in London, aimed at the punk market.
Glam Rock, sub-culture • The Glam Rock sub-culture was mainly seen in the music industry, with musicians and singers who wore outrageous clothes, makeup and hairstyles, particularyplatfom-soled boots and glitter. • The flamboyant costumes and visual styles of glam performers were often camp. • Glam rock peaked during the mid 1970’s with artists including T.Rex, Gary Glitter and David Bowie.
