  4. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ! ! ! Hi all,I spoke to Dean regarding our shifts this week:(i) There was a water failure on the Linac yesterday so the machine isstill not on. Tonight's shift is at risk.(ii) Dean couldn't find shift cover for Saturday so we will be limitedto 1V on Saturday. He will cover the shift on Friday so we can get up to4 V for the high intensity study on Friday. We should plan accordingly.I will probably see you later so we can talk then.Regards,Chris MICE CM25 - RAL

  20. STOP (SD: Oct 6th / Nov 3rd) MICE CM25 - RAL

  21. target progress Shut Down • T2 side forces due to non-simmetries in the stator coils? • a tough device, a tremendous effort !!! • yet we need that bit to have a completely reliable system … • T1 operated and BCD stability checked (400 shots) to spot possible deviations from normal behaviour (MICE-Note 270) • T3 development in progress • See next talk by Paul … MICE CM25 - RAL

  22. miscellanea Shut Down • EPICS • Neutron monitor from MICE LCR • Some little bugs fixed (sound alarm from ALH) • Luminosity Monitor … a near miss! • Installation postponed to next SD (practical reason) • Location identified: need to finalise cabling • REMINDER: installing in the ISIS vault is not ‘go & do it’ • preparation & docs • Hall Infrastructure MICE CM25 - RAL

  23. MICE CM25 - RAL

  24. Luminosity Monitor Shut Down • Identifying “best position” • (1)-(2)-(3) are all ~20m routing from the synchrotron • Paul’s best choice • ~10 m from TGT • ok close to wall and D1 • I reckon (3) is the best match • (1) has too high (rate) • (2) is past the ring (does ISIS like it?) ~20m 4.3 m 2 1 >8 m 6.3 m 3 3 ~20m MICE CM25 - RAL

  25. wire control proton absorber Shut Down • design completed (Geoff) and device installed on Friday 30th (Roger) • guillotine with 3 polyethilene blades (14, 29, 54) mm covering a range of values [14,29,…,97]mm • manually operated from the turret: no access to DSA, max flexibility! proton absorber GVA1 MICE CM25 - RAL

  26. READY TO START AGAIN a run plan for the month and half to come… MICE CM25 - RAL

  32. Run plan: detailed running Nov/Dec 1 Nov 10th • Q1-2-3 scan • Rationale: find the best 1st triplet configuration to produce PI (then MU) • Vary 1-2-3 together and/or one by one • Identify a stable configuration • Check results vs simulation u s e r s r u n MICE CM25 - RAL

  33. TOF0,1 calibrations running Nov/Dec 2 Nov 12th • Reserved for extra calibration of TOF0 and 1 • Typically electron (pion) runs at • 100, 150, 300 MeV/c • Any request from Cherenkov ? MICE CM25 - RAL

  34. (e,P) matrix running Nov/Dec Nov 17th • Use TOF0,1 to characterize emittance / momentum of the beam • In principle extrapolate to any position: say the diffuser • Set of optics optimised to produce (a,b) and e as required to match MICE step II+ • So far an exercise of optimisation based on g4beamline • Is it realistic? 3 4 MICE CM25 - RAL

  35. OnLine Reconstruction running Nov/Dec 5 Nov 23rd • Two days required • Set up and prepare the system • Push it to high rate and check its limit MICE CM25 - RAL

  37. Hi KenI’ ve come up with a set of orbit changes in the ring that could (if theywork) steer the beam away from the target  at < 8 ms by up to 10 mm.Then steer to the target from 8-9 ms by up to 10 mm and holding steadyfrom 9-10 ms.  This should hopefully give you a more beneficial spilltime, deeper dip potential and save us some unnecessary beam loss.  Iwill try to produce the orbits at some point during startup if there istime and then we could possibly have a go for real if your in agreement.Dean 0 8 9 10 ms 10 mm Beam Orbit MICE CM25 - RAL

  38. Summary • MICE took data during all September to beginning of October after a (forced) stop of nearly 9 months • successfully operated T1 for ~62K pulses • beamline fully operated and being commissioned • DAQ exercised • Detector exercised and calibrating MICE CM25 - RAL
