The Problem • Monterey County Health Department • The stresses related to acculturation into the U.S. has caused Hispanic men to abuse alcohol; therefore, the Hispanic community should be educated with culturally relevant information on this topic to prevent further negative outcomes and decrease the social and physical harms of alcoholism.

  3. Findings Effects: • Liver disease 12th cause of death in U.S.(Nguyen, 2008, p. 1060). • 6th leading cause of death for Hispanic males (Carrion, 2011, p. 834). • Hispanics are less likely to seek counseling • Young children surrounded by abuse • Study found 47.6% of Hispanic high school students have used alcohol in past 30 days (King, 2010). Causes: Stress from… • Acculturation (Immigration) • Socioeconomic (Poverty) • Minority (Lack of Education)

  4. Solutions • Culturally Relevant Programs • Trained Advocates • Spanish Language Intervention • Motivational Speakers in Schools • Health Professionals in Work Sites

Synthesis • Call to Action: Department step up to provide services to the Hispanic community (a growing population). • Excessive alcohol intake can cause further social problems, such as divorce, job loss, and legal problems (Caetano, 2003). • Spanish language materials that discuss the effects of alcohol for adults and use to provide prevention (Pearson, 2009, p. 5).
