  1. Bellwork Write a definition for the following key terms: • Transverse Waves • Longitudinal Waves • Amplitude • Wavelength • Frequency

  2. Learning Outcomes CONTENT To be able to describe the different types of seismic waves and to calculate the speed and distance they travel. PROCESS You will learn this by working through a circus of activities which include internet research and practise calculations. BENEFITS You will be able to explain how scientists are able to predict the structure of the earth using seismic waves.

  3. Earthquakes • Earthquakes happen when large parts of the Earth's crust and upper mantle move suddenly. It is difficult to predict exactly when and where an earthquake will happen, even when a lot of data is available. • Earthquakes produce shockwaves called seismic waves. These waves can be detected using seismographs. Some seismic waves are surface waves, while others can travel through the Earth.

  4. Your Activity • Today you are going to investigate the two different types of seismic waves, S-waves and P-waves. • You will do this by visiting a series of stations that will allow you to increase your knowledge.

  6. Station 2 We can calculate the speed of a wave by using the wave equation: wave speed = frequency x wavelength (m/s) (hertz, Hz) (metres, m) Use this equation to help you answer the questions on the worksheet

  7. Station 3 Seismometer You need to use the textbooks to answer the following questions: What is a seismometer? How does it work? What scale are Earthquake’s measured on?

Station 4 • Scientists use seismic waves to tell them more about the structure of the Earth. • Your Task • Draw and label a cross section of the Earth. • Read the hand out. • Identify what data scientists have. • What conclusions have they drawn from this data? • Summarise how scientists are able to predict the structure of the Earth.

  10. Review You need to work with the person next to you – number yourselves 1 and 2. Person 1 – You need to explain P-waves to your partner. Person 2 – You need to explain S-waves to your partner. You have 1 minute to explain your wave in as much detail as possible, try and include as many key words as possible.
