Partnership with Local Governments ○　Clarification of Points of Contact between local governments and nearby SDF units, bases ○　Active SDF participation to disaster prevention exercises led by local governments ○　Dispatch of SDF liaisons to local governments when disasters occur ○　Employment of retired SDF personnel by local governments as officials in charge of disaster prevention (44 out of 47 prefectures so far) SDF participation in Local Govs-led Disaster Prevention Exercises

Disaster Relief in Japan : From Request to SDF Dispatch Requester: Local (Prefectural )Governors, etc. City, Village Mayors: Request to Prefectual Governors (when not available, directly request to SDF) Request Request Recipients: Minister of Defense, Person assigned by the Minister Dispatch based on request Voluntary Dispatch Extremely urgent and no time to receive request Mission of Dispatched Units: Information Collection, Evacuation Support, Search & Rescue, Flood Control, Medical Evacuation, Epidemic Prevention, Supply food and water, etc.

SDF Posture Against Disasters 1 GSDF (Ground Self Defense Force) Quick Response Forces (QRFs) are STDBY 24hrs 7days Mobilized within 1 hour upon initial OPRD 2,700 personnel, 410 vehicles & 27 aviation assets 2 MSDF (Maritime Self Defense Force) 1 ship ready within 2 hours in each port 1 recon/rescue asset ready within 1-2 hours at each Airbase • ASDF (Air Self Defense Force) 1-2 rescue assets ready within 1-2 hours at each Airbase 1 airlift asset ready within 1-2 hours at each Airbase

SDF’s Posture for International Disaster Relief Operations International disaster operations the SDF have conducted are; ①Medical services, such as first-aid medical treatment and epidemic prevention ②Transport of goods, patients and disaster relief personnel by helicopter; ③ Water supplies using water-purifying devices GSDF: Each regional Army is assigned duties on a six-month rotation basis Can provide medical, transport and water supply services at anytime necessary MSDF and ASDF: Always ready to transport supplies to units participating in international disaster relief operations.
