  2. The health of our planet’s oceans is questionable • So, if we are to consider processing this seawater so that it is drinkable, we need to look at the challenges in doing that.

  3. Pollution in our Oceans • In the April issue of Scholastic (Super science edition), the matter of ocean garbage patches is underscored. In the Pacific, a gyre (ring of ocean currents) ensnares garbage to produce a conglomeration of plastic and trash. It will not break down for at least 1000 years. • The best guess is that about 10% of all discarded plastic ends up in our water. • Recently, a whale washed up on California’s shore dead; upon investigation, the whale was found to contain a large amount of discarded plastic materials, perhaps causing its death.

  4. Obviously, maintaining healthy oceans is critical to our well being as humans; we depend on them for our food and a well balanced ecosystem.

The recent Oil Spill in the Gulf • Not only is pollution with trash an issue, but oil, gas, and other toxins such as dispersants often wind up in our ocean water. • The jury is still out on the amount of damage done to our ocean water by these toxins, but the impact of these toxins must be considered in any scenario where these waters could be utilized for drinking water. • Oil in Fresh water -http://response.restoration.noaa.gov/faq_topic.php?faq_topic_id=1#1
