  1. African American Stereotypes By: Zakiya Hoots

  2. Why I Chose This Over my lifetime I’ve come to realize that many people, including myself place lots of negative stereotypes on blacks when in reality we’re not all that way. I began to notice it was everywhere. Television Slave talk (dad) My preference (implicit test) My experience Needy Poor

  3. What and Why To stereotypeis to place a group of similar people under one category making them all the same.

  4. Automatic Implicit Stereotyping • The inclination to feel a certain way about someone because of a specific characteristic • Skin complexion • Gender • Age • We don’t pay attention to how far they go and how much they effect us all

  5. My Foundation

  6. History Slavery, Segregation

  7. Slavery • Here to serve the white man & his family • political and economic relationship of hierarchy not prejudice • Justified by Christians • Africans were descendants of Ham and were cursed by his father Noah to be servants • Light vs. Dark • Present tied to history • Perception of black people has been closely tied to their history

  8. Segregation • These things led to the idea of blacks being less clean, less intelligent and overall inferior

  9. Reinforcement Television/Media, Music

  10. Television It’s impossible to forget What we see everyday • Vulgar Profanity • 89% Blacks • 5% Whites • Physically Violent • 56% Blacks • 11% Whites • Being Restrained • 55% Blacks • 6%Whites • Blacks seen in demeaning intellectual terms on TV • Mug shots are 4 times more likely to appear • Black on white crimes (over represented)

  11. Music We’ve come to a point where to “act black” is to act in this manner. If you act otherwise you’re not “acting black” Degrading, Classless, Bad Influences

  12. Effects of This Music • Sid Kirchheimer “Studied 522 black girls between the ages of 14 and 18 from non-urban, lower socioeconomic neighborhoods • compared to those who never or rarely watched these videos • the girls who viewed these gangster videos for at least 14 hours per week were far more likely to practice numerous destructive behaviors. • Over the course of the one-year study, they were: • Three times more likely to hit a teacher • Over 2.5 times more likely to get arrested • Twice as likely to have multiple sexual partners • 1.5 times more likely to get a sexually transmitted disease, use drugs, or drink alcohol. “ (7) • An experiment byJames D. Johnson, ‌Lee Anderson Jackson, ‌Leslie Gatto showed. • Young men wanted to be matrialistic like the ones on the vidoes (illegal or not) • Teens that spend more time watching the sex and violence depicted in the real life of gangster rap music videos are more likely to practice these behaviors in real life.

  13. When it All Adds Up… What does it mean to be black?

  14. Society looks down… • A survey was given to people of multiple races • Blacks were ranked worse or next to worse in every characteristic given • Laziest • Highest preference of assisted living (welfare) • 57% of non blacks rated blacks less intelligent then whites
