  2. The Pilgrims • In the United States the word "Pilgrims" usually refers to the English settlers of New England, who celebrated the "First Thanksgiving" with the Native Americans in 1621. • The Pilgrims' story of seeking religious freedom has become a central theme of the history and culture of the United States. • What does religious freedom mean in today’s culture?

  3. The Journey • 102 passengers set sail on Mayflowerin September 1620. • Initially the trip went smoothly, but under way they were met with strong winds and storms. One of these caused a main beam to crack, and although they were more than half the way to their destination, the possibility of turning back was considered. • One crew member and one passenger died before they reached land. A child was born at sea and named "Oceanus"

  4. Arrival in the New World • Land was sighted in November 1620. Small parties explored the area and a hill in Plymouth was chosen for a settlement in December. • Unfortunately, by December, most of the passengers and crew had become ill, coughing violently. Many were also suffering from the effects of scurvy. There had already been ice and snowfall, hampering futher exploration efforts. During the first winter, 47% of them died.

  5. Interactions with Native Americans • In general, there was a peaceful and friendly relationship between the colonists and the Wampanoag tribe. In fact, the situation is best summed up in the words of Edward Winslow, in a letter to a friend: 'We entertain them familiarly in our houses, and they as friendly bestowing their venison on us. They are a people without any religion or knowledge of God, yet very trusty, quick of apprehension, ripe-witted, just.'  It is clear that there was no perceived danger or underlying animosity existing between the two very different communities. • What is the status of Native Americans in today’s culture?

  6. The First Thanksgiving • It is thought that the "first" Thanksgiving was celebrated to give thanks to God for helping the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony survive the brutal winter.[2] The "first" Thanksgiving feast lasted three days providing enough food for 53 pilgrims and 90 Native Americans.[3] The feast consisted of fowl, venison, fish, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin, and squash. • When and how is Thanksgiving celebrated in the present day?
