  2. What a précis is: • A brief summary of the paper in a cohesive paragraph • An overview of the main points or topics of the paper • A means of identifying the structure and organization of the paper

  3. What a précis is not: • A list (bullet-pointed or otherwise) of topics or sources • An “attention getter” or “hook” for the paper • A place for quotes or source paraphrases

  4. What you need for your précis: • Standard MLA formatting • Formal, 3rd person language • A cohesive paragraph

  5. What you need for your précis: • A clear and focused thesis • A sentence or two explaining each of the main points of support in the paper • Proofreading for grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.
