  2. Introduction • Why do we play sport? • Why do we watch sport? • What’s the positives & negatives of live sport and sport on TV? • What sports do you watch live, in SA or away?

  3. SKILL • We learn to perform skills from a very young age • Some are simple (walking) • Some are complex (swimming) • Proficiency = PRACTICE

  4. SKILL • Make a continuum of 5 different skills, explaining how they go from simple to complex.

  5. WHAT IS SKILL? A specific action or the level of performance of an individual • They are goal orientated – the skill will achieve an end result. Eg: putting a golf ball into the hole. • They meet the Performance goal with maximum certainty.

  6. WHAT IS SKILL? 3. They meet the performance goal with minimum outlay of energy. Eg: Being streamlined when swimming. 4. They are learned through practice & experience.

  7. TYPES OF SKILL • MOTOR SKILL: emphasis on movement, not much thinking required. • Come up with 5 examples..

  8. TYPES OF SKILL • COGNITIVE SKILL: requires a lot of thinking. Knowledge of the game & decision making required. • Come up with 5 examples..

  9. TYPES OF SKILL • PERCEPTUAL SKILL: using your senses to assess a situation & help you make decisions. Vision, hearing, touch etc. • Come up with 5 examples..

  10. TYPES OF SKILL • PERCEPTUAL-MOTOR SKILLS: interpretation of environmental stimuli & the motor response to the sensory info. In most sports. • Come up with 5 examples..

  11. SKILL CLASSIFICATION • Read page 109 • Define the 3 classifications of skill, and come up with 4 examples for each. (don’t use the examples in the book) • Discrete Skills • Serial Skills • Continuous Skills
