  4. Where? ANYWHERE! Including…… • Rehabilitation Hospitals • Prisons & Detention Centers • Substance Abuse Treatment Facilities • Long Term Care • Community Settings • Camps • Schools • Psychiatric Units/Hospitals

  5. How?? • Sports • Games • Puzzles/ Crosswords • Pets • Music • Arts & Crafts • Team challenges • Dance • Theatre • Clubs • Travel • Education

  6. Outcomes?? • Improve functional abilities • Independence • Gain friendships and relationship skills • Improve communication • Learn coping skills • Breaking barriers • Learn new skills • Improve overall quality of life!

  7. A Success Story….. Kathy Age: 50 *Traumatic Brain Injury in 1996 *Lives in Rochester, MN

  8. FYI… • Every 23 seconds, one person in the US sustains a Traumatic Brain Injury. • More than 50,000 people die every year as a result of Traumatic Brain Injury. (www.biausa.org)

  9. More about Kathy….. *Hemiplegic on her left side *Lives in a group home with four other ladies *Loves Animals *Likes to be called “Biker Babe” *Attends the Ability Building Center’s day program called Abilities Unlimited

  10. What did TR do for Kathy?? • AU is a day program for people with TBI- it offered her a network of people much like her • It offers Arts & Crafts, Current Events, Exercise, Outings and more…. • Kathy started going in 2004 two days/week

  11. Abilities Unlimited Helped Kathy Cope! What she wanted to get from AU... What AU gave Kathy… • Friendships • Learn new skills • Be placed in the job program • Lots of Friendships • A Best Friend (her CTRS) • Memories • Education about TBI • Pen pals • A new job • New skills…including learning to send E-MAIL!! • And a love for UNO!
