UNDERSTANDING RACISM (INTELLIGENTLY) Elston L Stephenson, OHST
BLUF As Sexual Harassment isn’t about sex, it’s about power; Racism isn’t about race, it’s about power.
DEFINITION (Principle 1) RACISM: STATURE + AUTHORITY + DIGNITY And Their Denial from the ‘Target Race’ Particularly when compared to ‘similarly situated’ others
DEFINITION (Principle 2) POWER: STATURE + AUTHORITY + DIGNITY (3 Types: Legitimate, Knowledge, Informal) Asserting ‘superiority’ by diminishing the power (types) of the target race is a key feature and ultimate goal of Racism Any power by the target race is perceived as a taking away from the ‘privileged race’ and a primal stimulus threat
Principle 3 Racism is a pathology that existentially NEEDS expression and validation beyond any control The racist can’t help himself. There must be an outlet or outburst. Besides, what good is being superior if no one knows about it?
