Fire started in restaurant on 1st Floor Rear of restaurant was open to roof above a drop ceiling 2nd Floor occupancies affected were Drug Treatment Clinic and Massage Therapy Spa 2 civilians found sleeping on 2nd floor No injuries reported Lightweight building construction The roof was constructed using open web trusses two feet on center with long spans During firefighting operations portions of the roof collapsed as well as parts of the second floor Fire Information

Ventilation of Lightweight Roofs • From “Roof Cutting Operations and Firefighter Safety” Letter to All Members from BES (8/2/07): • Lightweight Roofs- “Members shall never conduct ventilation operations directly over a working fire on a lightweight roof. Lightweight Construction • Building was of block construction • Roof was lightweight open-web trusses • Catastrophic failure of roof occurred • 2nd Story floor joists were constructed with lightweight materials • 2nd Floor occupancies’ floor joists failed • Ventilation allowed Fire Attack team to recognize failing floor on 2nd story • Fire Attack team felt ‘as if sliding on linoleum’.
