  2. Student based learning is very appropriate for the study of Social Studies and History. Student Based or Learner Centered classes do the following:

  3. -Connect life experiences to the learner -Provide purposeful thinking for the learner -Usually include student products that demonstrate student learning

  4. Examples of Student Based or Learner Centered Instruction Problem Based Learning-cooperatively working to find solutions to real life issues Example: What were the roles of men and women in colonial America and how did those roles influence family life?

  5. INQUIRY BASED LEARNING • Asking a question such as “Explain the convergence of three worlds?” or playing a game similar to “Twenty Questions” where the teacher or students make a thinking statement such as “I’m thinking about a form of government” and students ask yes or no questions to discover the correct response.

  6. INDUCTIVE METHODS • A series of unknown facts or questions and learners search out answers.

  7. ROLE PLAY • Student takes on the characteristics of someone else.

  8. SIMULATION • Creating a real life scenario in the classroom

  9. STUDENT PRODUCTS • Cartoons; websites; crossword puzzles; songs; play scripts; newspapers; historic document; reports; maps; murals; lesson plans; performance; illustrated timeline; quilts…

  10. ASSESSMENT GUIDE or RUBRIC • Establishing assessment guides for projects allows teachers and students to know exactly what is expected.
