  3. Personality • Personality: • The consistent, enduring, and unique characteristics of a person

  4. Psychoanalytic Theory: Sigmund Freud • Unconscious Mind: • The part of the mind that contains material of which we are unaware but that strongly influences conscious processes and behaviors

Psychoanalytic Theory:Sigmund Freud • Id: • Part of the unconscious mind • Contains our needs, drives, instincts, and repressed material • “Pleasure Principle” • Ego: • Part of the conscious mind (in touch with reality) • Strives to balance/meet the needs of the id and the superego in socially acceptable ways • “Reality Principle” • Superego: • Part of the conscious mind (in touch with reality) • Source of one’s conscience • Counteracts the socially undesirable impulses of the id • “Moral Principle”
