Nigeria • There were several different tribes present in Nigeria prior to its colonization • The Nok, Kano, Katsina, and Hasua were all kingdoms that controlled some part of what is today Nigeria up until the 1800’s • These people all lived in very agricultural societies before the imperial age

  3. While limber and fishing were important resources noticed by the British in Nigeria, the discovery of massive oil reserves there helped to establish a strong colonial hold on the land and people.

  4. One of the most effective methods of gaining control in Nigeria was the use of missionaries to slowly gain natives’ comfort and trust. • The Royal Niger Company also acted as a buffer for Britain to come into Nigeria unofficially at first via a business like the English East Indian Trade Company in the far East.

Although some military force was needed later to enforce colonial rule, the spread of British influence and control was quick and covered most of the nation without conflict. • Once a dominant position was taken by the British, most Nigerian workers received next to nothing for their work compared to their “employer.”

The British Release of Nigeria • After several small uprisings, like the British conquest of Benin and the Anglo-Aro war, throughout the 20th century, the English parliament agreed to grant Nigeria complete independence on October 1, 1960. • There were many reasons that Nigerians under British rule were unhappy. • The most dominant reason was the failure of the British to abolish slavery until 1936.

  7. Although the English withdrew official ties and connections in Nigeria in 1960, they set up a system of government so as to not create utter chaos in their departure. • This action helped Nigeria begin to become a strong, sovereign nation with its newly granted autonomy.

  8. Soon after Nigeria’s establishment as a nation it switched its own government from the English-established Parliamentary Democracy to a Federal Republic. • Since Nigeria’s liberty was granted it has gone through several different coups and regimes that have mainly failed to serve the people and have created large social rift.

  9. Today Nigeria is run by a government modeled after the United States. • Though there is considerable stability today there is still much corruption, crime, poverty, and hunger plaguing the nation.
