Thoughts on Summaries • Topics are not points!!! • Here’s an example… • Topic: Public Health has been beneficial • Point: Public Health initiatives account for 85%, or 31 years, of the increased average life expectancy from 1900-2007. • Be sure to include context… (more on this soon) • Question 1: “What is the most significant point you learned in today's class?” • What do we mean by this?

  2. Finish the Idiom You can lead a horse to water… But you can’t make him drink!!! Meaning: You can offer something to someone, like good advice, but you cannot make them take it. Application: In teaching, we attempt to convey to you information we want you to know, but it is up to you to learn it! Now… Where is that water???

  3. Conveying Significance • What is significant, or most important?? • Bold, italicized or underlined words • Be careful that they are points and not topics! • Or one of our favorite ways… • Labeling them as such with bright red outlines • That’s the what, and here’s the how… Fundamental & Powerful Concept

  4. Clarity and Relevance How do I perform at the highest level? • You can be crystal clear without being relevant at all… • Example: The phrase, “My Very Eager Mother Just Sat Upon Nine Pins” used to be a great way to remember the names and positions of the planets in our solar system. • Tips: You can use complete sentences, be clear about the point you are trying to make, and be sure to add context and specifics!

  5. Clarity and Relevance How do I perform at the highest level? • Being relevant in your answer means that it relates to the content of the class. • This can be done without clarity… • Example: Population Health is really important to public health because that’s what the focus is on these days. • Very relevant to Class 2, but what is population health? If that’s the focus today, then what did it used to be?

  6. Final words about the Summaries • We want you to do well on the summaries. • They are a tool for both the students and the teachers to grasp, and ultimately, master the course content • Over the semester, you will perform at a higher level on them • Both as you get practice doing them and as you figure out what we want from you! Remember: We can lead you through the content… But you have to learn it!!!
