Learn about the functions, structure, care, and problems associated with the skin - the largest organ in the body. Explore how the skin protects, regulates temperature, and senses the world around you.
E N D
What are we learning? • Functions • Purpose • Why do we have it? • Structure • What is it made of? • Arrangement • Parts • Care • Prevent injury and disease • How to keep the system healthy • Problems • Diseases, annoyances…
Which organ Is the largest and has more functions than any other organ?Your SKIN!!!!Integumentary System
Objectives • Function • Name 2 of the 3 functions of the skin. • Explain how the body regulates temperature. • Structure • Name the 2 layers of the skin. • Label 6 parts of the skin diagram from memory. • Care • Explain 2 ways to care for the skin. • Name 2 foods that contain Vitamin A. • Problems • Explain 3 problems for the skin. • Activity • Present information on the prevention, description, cure & treatment of a skin disease to the class in the form of a mind map.
3 Functions 1. Protective cover for body • Barrier between organs and outside world • Shields from • Injury • Invasion of pathogens • UV rays 2. Regulates body temperature • When you’re hot the blood vessels enlarge & heat escapes • Sweat glands release perspiration
3 Functions 3. Sense world around you • Nerve endings respond to • Touch, pain, pressure, temperature
Structure-2 Main Layers • Epidermis: outer, thinner layer • Dead & living cells • Some cells produce melanin • Pigment that gives skin, hair, iris (eye) their coloring • The more melanin the more the protection from UV (ultraviolet) rays • Dermis: inner, thicker layer • Gives skin its elasticity • Sweat glands, blood vessels More melanin
Care • Good hygiene • Wash face morning & night • Daily shower/bath slows bacteria growth that causes body odor • Balanced diet • Vitamin A • Milk, egg yolks, liver, green leafy & yellow vegetables, yellow fruits • Wear sunscreen
Group Work * Problems Activity • Directions • Create a mind map or outline of a problem to share with the class • You must use the following 5 titles: • Description • what it looks like • Prevention • How to stay away from the problem • Cure & Treatment • How to get rid of the problem • Pathogen • Virus, bacteria, fungus… • Transmission • Is it contagious? Can it be passed from person to person?
Problems • Ringworm • Athlete’s Foot • Boil
Problems 5. Moles • Psoriasis • Blister
Problems • Corn/Callus • Skin Cancer 10. Acne
Problems • Ringworm • Fungal infection • Forms a ring-shaped, scaly, reddened or blistery patch • Athlete’s foot • Fungal infection between toes • Wearing shoes & sweating • Highly contagious • Wear “shower shoes” in public locker rooms
Problems • Boils • Inflamed, pus-filled • Infected hair follicle • Never squeeze or burst • Spreads infection • Warts • Contagious growth caused by viruses • Most are harmless & painless • Moles • Small, slightly thickened brown spots • Usually harmless • If there is a dramatic change (grows, color, bleeds) see a doctor (may be skin cancer)
Problems • Blister • Raised areas filled with watery fluid • Skin rubbing (foot against shoe) • Protect from breaking • Callus • Thickened skin from continuous friction and pressure • String instrument musicians • Treatment • Rub with a pumice • Corn • Callus on toe from tight fitting shoes Pumice
Problems • Psoriasis • Normal rate of cell production is speeded up and cells pile up faster than they can be shed • Triggered by emotional stress, damage to skin or period of generally poor health • Thickened patches of inflamed, red skin covered by white, flaking scales • Treatment: physician
Problems • Vitiligo • Patches of skin lose color • Extremely sensitive to sunlight • Believed to be an absence of skin cells that produce melanin • No cure • In 30% of the cases the skin color returns naturally
Problems • Acne • Inflammation of hair follicles and sebaceous glands • Inside each hair follicle is a sebaceous gland that produces an oily substance called sebum that lubricates the skin • If body produces too much oil, it might be trapped in hair follicle, bacteria can multiply in the blocked follicle and become inflamed causing a pimple
Problems • Eczma • Redness, flaking and/or blistering • MOVIE!!! • http://www.healthcentral.com/bcp/April_03/flash_content/blausenplay.asp?id=141&page=blausen&ap=446&brand=5
