  1. 5th Grade Friday Wrap upA recap of our week 11/1/13 Mrs. Faust, Mr. Cimino, Mrs. Thierjung, Mr. Fleming, & Mrs. Mowatt Reading Each child is working on Guided Reading in addition to the Shared Reading you have been hearing about in our recent newsletters. Guided Reading is done in small groups in each classroom. Each group is working on various comprehension strategies as well as practicing the strategies learned during Shared Reading! Ask your child what he /she is reading during this time of their school day! (SL.5.1a, SL.5.1d) Science This week in science we finished up our plant unit! (SL.5.1d) All were excited to watch our specimens grow and write entries in our science journal each week. We culminated this unit with a unit assessment on Wednesday. We will be beginning the Too Good For Drug Unit on Monday. This unit is very student centered and utilizes appropriate real world scenarios.(SL.5.1d) Social Studies This week we began our journey into chapter 7 “Comparing the Colonies.” We explored the key terms and also delved into a brief introduction to the colonial regions in North America. (New England, Middle and Southern regions)We are looking forward next week to working in cooperative groups to explore the reasons these colonies were formed, their geography, economy and governments. (SL 5.1)(SL5.4)(RL5.1)(W5.10) Math We have spent all week working our way through lesson 2.4, Dividing by Tens, Hundreds, or Thousands. (5.NBT.1, 5.NBT.2, 5.NBT.6, 5.OA.1 and 5.OA.3) It is a review of patterns and the use of Compatible Numbers. Ask your child what else we call a compatible number! There are two other ways! We are also still practicing our rounding skills. The vocabulary words we have been using all week are: quotient, dividend and divisor, these are words that every student should now feel comfortable hearing and using. Important Upcoming Events • Election Day/No School 11/5/13 • Marking Period Ends 11/8/13 Reminders *We can always be reached by email should you have any concerns or questions. *You have all received your invitation to this year’s ELF Fund dinner.
