  2. Hypertension • high blood pressure • Called the “Silent Killer” – no symptoms in early stages • pressure of 140/90 is considered high • stress, smoking, poor diet as well as heredity contribute to high blood pressure

  3. Effects of high blood pressure

  4. CORONARY ARTERIES • Arteries that feed the heart muscle itself.

  5. ATHEROSCLEROSIS • the process in which plaques accumulate on artery walls. • arteries become thicker and lose their elasticity • caused mainly by food choices – especially a high in take of saturated fats and cholesterol

  9. ANGINA PECTORIS • chest pain that results when the heart does not get enough oxygen • warning signal – get to medical help

  10. ARRHYTHMIAS • irregular heartbeats • heart may seem to skip a beat or beat very quickly or very slowly

  11. HEART ATTACK • damage to the heart muscle caused by a reduced or blocked blood supply • Heart muscle not getting enough oxygen • Part of heart dies, the rest keeps beating B

  12. Symptoms of a Heart Attack • mild pain or discomfort in chest • pressure or pain in chest • pain in arm, neck or jaw • nausea or vomiting • sweating • shortness of breath • pain in back ( especially in women) • Immediate response to symptoms is the difference between life and death
