INTRODUCTION The course will cover aspects of • Statistical treatment of data(Errors; measurement and precision, significant figures) • Atomic theory(discovery of the nucleus, periodic law, electronic energy levels etc) • Stoichiometry(molecular formulae, mole concept, derivation of chemical formulae and equations, Concentrations, molarity and volumetric calculations) • Acid-base Equilibria • Oxidation and Reduction Equilibria(Definition of oxidation and reduction processes; Redox reactions; calculations) • Chemical Equilibra • Thermochemistry • Electrochemistry • Chemical Kinetics (rate at which a chemical reaction takes place) • Radioactivity

Aim of the Course • To develop student generic skill in the area of General Chemistry. • To develop their ability in analysing, estimating and minimising errors encountered in analytical data • To be able to know how atoms are discovered as well as their respective properties • To be able to understand simple laboratory techniques NB: The fundamental chemical and physical principles involved in chemical reactions are emphasized.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES After completing the lesson, students will be able • To analyze and estimate errors in statistical data. • To list constituents of atoms and their properties • To recognise the appropriate laboratory techniques to be employed for different chemical analysis. • To develop analytical skill

Studying the reference materials and practising the questions at the end of each chapter will enhance your performance in the final examinations.

NB: Books, such as Physical Chemistry by P.W. Atkins and Analytical Chemistry by Skooger, Holler and West, will not be required to pass examination in this course, however it will provide excellent additional information concerning this course if you choose to read them.

  11. PREPARATORY QUESTIONS • Practice questions at the end of each chapter of the reference book will be helpful in preparing for exams. • Past examination questions and tutorial questions will also be useful.

  12. ASSESSMENT • Continuous assessment which includes Quiz, Assignment, Mid-Semester Test and Attendance will constitute 30% of overall assessment. • Examination will be 70%. • EXAM MALPRACTICES AND PLAGIARISM WILL ATTRACT PENALTY SUCH AS FAILURE IN THE COURSE OR REFERRAL TO ODL DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE
