INTRODUCTION The course will cover aspects of • The quantitative and statistical treatment of experimental data, • theory of sampling, • gravimetric methods, • chemical methods of analysis; • Principles and applications of instrumentation to chemical analysis; • topics covered include electrochemistry, • spectroscopy, • mass spectrometry, and • chromatography.   5. Aim of the Course • To develop students generic skill in the area of Analytical Chemistry. • To develop their ability in analysing, estimating and minimising errors encountered in analytical data • To be able to understand simple laboratory techniques

LEARNING OBJECTIVES • Objectives: • The primary objective of this course is to develop the tools and knowledge necessary to decide exactly what instrumental techniques will give you the most accurate and useful qualitative and/or quantitative information for a particular analytical problem. • A quick scan of the topics on the remaining pages of the syllabus should quickly make you aware of the wide variety of instrumental methods available to scientists, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Requirements are to become familiar with the basics of each technique.

NB: Books, such as Analytical Chemistry by Skooge, Holler and West, will not be required to pass examination in this course, however, if you choose to read them, it will provide excellent additional information concerning the course.

  11. PREPARATORY QUESTIONS • Practice questions at the end of each chapter of the reference book will be helpful in preparing for exams. • Past examination questions and tutorial questions will also be useful.

  12. ASSESSMENT • Continuous assessment which includes Quiz, Assignment, Mid-Semester Test and Attendance will constitute 30% of overall assessment. • Examination will be 70%.

  13. Code of Conduct • EXAM MALPRACTICES AND PLAGIARISM WILL ATTRACT PENALTY SUCH AS FAILURE IN THE COURSE OR REFERRAL TO ODL DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE.
