  2. Europe has a large amount of developed countries.

  3. What does it mean to be developed? • You have a high Gross Domestic Product (GDP) • GDP = the total value of all products manufactured and goods provided within that territory during a specified period (usually 1 year) • High life expectancy • Low population growth • Families have less children • Low infant mortality • High literacy rate

  4. Difference between Eastern and western Europe

  5. Communism to capitalism • Eastern Europe was under Communist Russia’s control in the early 1900s. • After the European countries broke off they became capitalist countries rather than communist. • This is why they are economically behind Western Europe. (They are in the transition of becoming developed)

  9. European Union • The European Union or EU is an international organization of European states, established by the Treaty on European Union (the Maastricht Treaty).

  12. The members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) are countries in Europe and North America. • All have made a promise to help defend each other if any of them is attacked. • NATO was founded in 1949. • Its headquarters are in Brussels, Belgium.
