Geography of Europe. Because Europe has many types of landforms and climates, different ways of life have developed there. Growing up in southern Spain is much different from growing up in northern Finland. Just like growing up in Los Angeles is different from growing up in Alaska.

Europe is a continent full of many distinct and unique cultures and languages.
Although we call Europe a continent, it is actually a part of Eurasia, the large landmass that includes both Europe and Asia.
Europe’s topography varies from place to place. Topography refers to the shape and elevation of land in a region.
Mountain ranges cover much of southern Europe. Some peaks in the Alps reach higher then 15,000 feet.
North of the Alps, the land is much flatter than in southern Europe. Most of northern Europe is part of the vast Northern European Plain.
Europe is a peninsula full of peninsulas. Scandinavia is Europe’s largest peninsula.

Farmers grow olives and other hardy crops in the drier, warmer areas along the Mediterranean in southern Europe.
In central and northern Europe, cities have grown along rivers. Rivers have been routes for moving people and goods.
In places like Scandinavia, people settled on the coast, and looked to the sea and beyond for the resources they needed.
