Renewal of the Covenant Under Nehemiah Nehemiah 13:1-31
Something To Think About What was Nehemiah’s greatest accomplishment? Although Nehemiah is usually remembered for his leadership role in the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem, he did much more than that. In fact, his greatest work may have been the part he played in bringing about spiritual renewal in the lives of the people. His emphasis on faithful obedience to the Word of God was instrumental in bringing about a revival of obedience among the people.
KEY VERSE Nehemiah 13:22a “And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day”.
Lesson Objectives To recognize the importance of obedience in the life of a Christian To enjoy following God’s will To love the Word of God
RESTORING OBEDIENCE TO THE WORD OFGOD Nehemiah 13:1-14 Separation From the Mixed Multitudes (1-3) Deuteronomy 23:3-6 Casting Out Tobiah (4-9) Renewing the Tithe (10-14)
God is concerned about purity among His people, and that is one fact that cannot be mistaken if we study His Word. Now, Christians are the temple of God as His Holy Spirit dwells within us (1 Corinthians 6:19). Yet, how often do we “justify” and rationalize some action or thought as a harmless mistake or sin? How can believers in the process of sanctification continue to grow in God’s grace and purify their lives of sin? Read the following verses: Hebrews 4:12; Isaiah 55:11; Jeremiah 23:29; 2 Timothy 3:16; and Psalm 107:20. In their respective order, these verses tell us that the Word of God pierces to the heart, never returns void, brings judgment, is profitable for reproof and correction, and brings spiritual healing. God’s Word is the truth to change our perspective, convict of sin, and compel us to His mercy.
RESTORING OBSERVANCE OF THE SABBATH Nehemiah 13:15-22 Profaning the Sabbath (15-16) Rebuke (17-18) Renewal of Sabbath Law (19-22)
Although we now worship on Sunday (the Lord’s Day) in celebration of the resurrection of Christ, the principle of honoring God one day in seven still remains. On the subject of the Lord’s Day, The Treatise of the Faith and Practice of the National Association Free Will Baptists, Inc. says, “This is one day in seven, which from the creation of the world God has set apart for sacred rest and holy service. Under the former dispensation, the seventh day of the week, as commemorative of the work of creation, was set apart for the Lord’s Day. Under the Gospel, the first day of the week, in commemoration of the resurrection of Christ, and by authority of Christ and the apostles, is observed as the Christian Sabbath.” One of the things that so outraged Nehemiah was the conducting of business on the Sabbath. This brings up the question: Should Christians work on Sunday? In our day people face difficult dilemmas concerning Sunday employment, and good people stand on both sides of the issue.
RESTORING THE PURITY OF MARRIAGE Nehemiah 13:23-31 Forbidden Intermarriage (23-24) Nehemiah’s Rebuke (25-27) Cleansing the Priesthood (28-31)
Nehemiah’s prayer is a great example for all believers. We should also ask God to expose evil deeds and bring the guilty to repentance. Prayers centered on God working for our good— growing in mercy, repentance, faith, and love—are always centered in God’s will (Romans 8:28).
QUESTIONS FOR STUDY AND DISCUSSION 1. Discuss the principle of separation of God’s people from the world. 2. How do you think the Lord’s Day (Sunday) should be observed? 3. Mixed marriage was the “great evil” spoken of in Nehemiah 13:27. What “great evils” of our day should the church address? 4. Discuss the principle of the tithe. 5. Why do you think Ezra and Nehemiah were so effective as leaders of God’s people? 6. What hindered the spiritual growth of the Israelites in Nehemiah’s day? In your opinion, what hinders spiritual growth in your culture?
