  1. Decomposition By Will and Katelyn

  2. Decomposition • In a decomposition reaction, a single compound is broken down into two or more particles.

  3. How Decomposition Reactions Occur • Decomposition Reactions always involve an exchange of energy, which is classified as either endothermic or exothermic. • In an endothermic reaction, energy is absorbed and usually caused by heat or electricity. • An exothermic reaction is a release of energy, usually combustion. 4. How to Write an Equation for Decomposition Reactions Click here!!!

  5. How to Write Equations for Decomposition Reactions • Find the correct formula for the compound water 2H2O • Separate the elements (and compounds if any!): 2H2O  2H2 + O2 *Watch out for HONClBrF!* 3. Balance the equation (if needed)

  6. Visual: How to Write an Equation for Decomposition Reactions

  7. Walkthrough 2NaCl Na Na Cl 2Na Cl Cl Na Na Cl Cl Answer: 2Na+Cl

  8. Try it!Write the balanced equations Mercury (II) Oxide Hg2+O2- • Hg2 + O2 • Hg + O Hg Hg O O

  9. Try it!Write the Formula H2 +Br2 • 2HBr • H2Br2 • HBr Br Br H H

  10. Homework Write the balanced chemical equations for these decomposition reactions: • Ag2O • Nickel (II) Carbonate  Nickel (II) Oxide + Carbon Dioxide • Ammonium nitrate  Dinitrogen Monoxide + Water
