  1. The Origin of Man Theories Concerning the Origin of Man

  2. Creationist • Religion • Adam and Eve • Man was created in his present day form. • Where did the one celled animal come from?

  3. Evolutionary • Man and other animals evolved from one celled animals to COMPLEX forms. • Backed by fossil evidence. • Darwin Survival of the Fittest- • Those animals that have traits that allow them to survive in the environment will live on and reproduce those traits.

  4. Intelligent Design • Certain features of the universe and living things are best explained through an intelligent cause, not an undirected process like natural selection. • Proponents argue that it is a scientific theory. • Scientists argue that it is pseudoscience • Kitzmiller v Dover Area School District (2005). Intelligent Design is not science it is religion. • Establishment Clause of the First Amendment

  5. Evolutionary Theory does not believe that… • Man descended from apes and gorillas. • It DOES state: we all have a common ancestor.

  6. According to Evolutionary Theory, what was our ancestor like? • Lived…. in the trees. • Vision… stereoscopic (depth perception) • Brachetian…could swing from branch to branch. • Fingers… used to have CLAWS like cats, soon fingers grew longer to grab branches. OPPOSABLE THUMBS allowed us our ancestor to grab things.

  7. Everybody’s Doin’ the Locomotion… • When did our ancestor come down from the trees? • 4 million years ago. • So What? • On his hind feet. • Called BIPEDAL LOCOMTION. • 1. See over the top of the grass. • 2. See predators coming. • 3. Frees up hands so he/she can carry tools or weapons.

  8. What’d we get from the deal? • Bigger Brains! • Smarter • Learn Language • Good communication leads to generational advancement. • Smaller Birth Canal! • More premature births (less pain) • More dependent infants. • Rely on learned behavior rather than instinctive behavior

  9. Can there be a Middle Ground? • Creation Theory vs. Evolutionary Theory or Religion vs. Science?
