  8. MTR Payload On-orbit Configuration Payload Launch Configuration Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int

  9. MTR Reconsideration of Major Assumptions • Use of CEPA (Columbus External Payload Adapter) instead of customised adapter • Provision of Columbus commandable switches for each power line available at CEPF • MCAS activation at CEPF and at parking location (use of US-1553 MIL bus) • FRAM on-orbit mass carrying capability Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int

  10. MCAS ACTIVATION MCAS activation at CEPF • Based on investigations performed also with the involvement of NASA and Boeing, it has resulted that the MCAS remote activation can only be implemented via the ISS system standard MIL bus 1553 • However the ISS system standard MIL bus 1553 is not available at CEPF, where only NASA and ESA PL standard MIL bus 1553 are available Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int

  11. MCAS ACTIVATION MCAS activation at CEPF (Cont’d) • Several potential solutions to remotely activate the MCAS have been studied: • Installation of suitable SW in the (NASA or ESA) PL standard MIL bus available at CEPF • Modification of MCAS SW, assuming that IMCA (Integrated Motor Control Assembly) protocol is compatible with (NASA or ESA) PL standard MIL bus 1553 available at CEPF Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int

  12. MCAS ACTIVATION MCAS activation at CEPF (Cont’d) • Unfortunately neither of the a.m. SW adaptations, which have been investigated with the help of NASA and Boeing, seem to be viable • Therefore another alternative, currently under close scrutiny, is to avoid the MCAS remote activation and to install EUSO via a combination of EVA and EVR activities => However EVA accessibility to (passive) MCAS or FRAM must be ensured Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int

  13. MCAS ACTIVATION MCAS activation at contingency parking location • The current baseline for the contingency parking of EUSO is the MBS (Mobile Based System) at the truss site: in this case the MCAS can be remotely activated via the ISS system standard MIL bus 1553 available at MBS • The alternative contingency parking of EUSO is the TAB (Trunnion Attachment Beam), which is part of the “Columbus Enhancement” study (hence not yet confirmed) • Similarly to what analysed for the nominal position, the MCAS cannot be activated at the TAB location, hence the same conclusions apply Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int

  14. FRAM ON-ORBIT MASS CARRYING CAPABILITY • In the context of the MCAS activation analysis the FRAM on-orbit mass carrying capability has also been investigated • Based on the results of the NASA and Boeing recent development of CEPA (for standard payloads) it has been concluded that the FRAM on-orbit mass carrying capability compatible with EUSO need to be confirmed Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int

  15. FRAM ON-ORBIT MASS CARRYING CAPABILITY • From a preliminary NASA and Boeing evaluation it seems that the FRAM strength is not an issue while fatigue needs to be further re-evaluated => design analysis needs to be performed in order to conclude that the FRAM can carry up to 1500 Kg under on-orbit loads • In the mean time the Columbus re-certification activities are proceeding with the aim to verify that the CEPF balcony can carry up to 1500 Kg under on-orbit loads => The current plan is to include in a preliminary form the a. m. analysis in the Columbus re-certification activities waiting for a detailed design analysis of the FRAM to be performed in Phase B Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int

  16. INSTRUMENT MID-PHASE A REVIEW • As an outcome of the SST #2 it was recommended to ESA to perform an external review of the EUSO Instrument • Therefore ESA (D/SCI) appointed a group of experts to review the instrument baseline at mid-way of the Phase A also to contribute to the instrument definition process • This review was concluded on 20 March 2003 Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int

  17. INSTRUMENT MID-PHASE A REVIEW Major Review Outcomes • Large number of issues still to be tackled and solved before Instrument Phase A completion • Lack of a LIDAR conceptual design that responds to EUSO needs and is compatible with the allocated resources • Mass and power budgets not yet consolidated and not in line with relevant allocations • Need of further strengthening of the Instrument Consortium • Need of further improvement of the communication flow between instrument team and industrial contractor • Lack of adequate system engineering leadership Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int

  18. LIDAR STATUS • Based on the Instrument Consortium request and following the SST#2 recommendation the LIDAR has been formally introduced in the Phase A contract, having the relevant CCN (Contract change Notice) been approved by ESA • The feasibility of introducing the LIDAR in the current EUSO baseline will be evaluated at the LIR (LIDAR Implementation Review) which is planned in early June 2003 and will end the Task 2 extension activities • Due to this Task 2 extension the Phase A schedule has been elongated: Final Review now planned towards the end of October 2003 Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int

  19. CONCLUSION AND WAY TO PROCEED • Though reconsidering few technical assumption the ESA Phase A Study is proceeding towards its final stage • The EUSO Instrument Phase A needs to be adequately completed such that relevant recommendations provide by the Mid-Phase A Review Board are properly implemented • Therefore an adequate and coherent way to proceed could be: • Hold the Instrument Phase A Final Review beginning September • Finalise the Instrument contribution to PL documentation beginning of October • Close the Phase A Study with the Final Review end of October Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int

  20. CONCLUSION AND WAY TO PROCEED • The following conditions must be achieved prior to move to Phase B and C/D: • Successfully completion of the Phase A • Agreement on cooperation between the two ESA Directorates (Space Science and Human Spaceflight) for the B and C/D Phases • Introduction of EUSO into ESA Space Science and Human Spaceflight Programs • Agreements between ESA and the Funding Agencies of the Instrument Consortium Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int

  21. CONCLUSIOY TO PROCEED • Moreover it is clear that in order to successfully implement EUSO mission the required up/download resources need to be shared between NASA, NASDA and ESA • Therefore it is of fundamental importance that the US and Japanese partners of the Instrument Consortium involve their respective space agencies in the relevant Phase B and C/D preparatory discussions Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int

  22. CONCLUSION AND WAY TO PROCEED I WISH ALL OF YOU A SUCCESSFUL MEETING AND TO EUSO …. ALL THE BEST FOR PHASE A, B AND C/D AND FINALLY A SUCCESSFUL MISSION !!!!! Giacinto Gianfiglio, Head of External Payloads Section D/MSM-GFE - ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Ph: +31-71-5654744 Fax: +31-71-5653111, e-mail: giacinto.gianfiglio@esa.int
